My initial sketchbook notes—

Evergreen: eternal, enduring, life. The color of trees that keep their color and thrive in this otherwise season recognized by endings.

Red: human, blood, berries. An acknowledgment of sacrifice  and a reminder that we are still alive.

Gold: Spirituality, preciousness, faith

I think the Christmas season as it is recognized through its colors, red, green and gold is about life — new and long-lasting, body and spirit — and that life is something to be celebrated and honored.

Winter is a time associated with death and endings but what comforts me about Christmas is that it is full of vitality. Christmas celebrates the birth of Christ, a life come to earth to bring hope, peace, comfort and belonging to all of us. The life found at Christmastime is also reflected in the spreading of good will. We are all, believers and otherwise, moved at this time to give, to be little extra loving, to make amends with those we love, to be graceful and gentle. Our attitudes soften, our perspectives widen, and our hearts open.

Every year, I feel so fortunate to witness this abundant care for others.

These paintings, “Evergreen Spirits” were created to lovingly express and celebrate enduring graceful spirits.
