Invent Yourself, Then Reinvent Yourself

Lovingly referred to as “Mack” by me

If you remember a few years ago I did a series of paintings supporting Vida Plena. This canvas was intended to be a final piece in that collection. I had the foundation painting but it wasn’t coming together in time.

So it sat.

Months later, I covered it it white gesso. All the raised paint remained. This canvas became a white space filled with bumps and strokes and little mountains. Attempt No. 2 at discovering what this canvas (the largest I’ve painted on in a long time) wanted to be.

Flash forward to the end of 2020. I was thinking about how much our circumstances effect our growth and development.

Rolling with punches
Adapting to change
Reflection and re-evaluation

Coffee conversations
Shared music
Vulnerability.

Calming blues and empathetic greens create fields of understanding. Pops of gold and warm yellows adding excitement, life and positivity.

Reinvention is not always about fixing short comings, sometimes it’s about being a work in progress. All your layers, the visible and invisible work together to create a beautiful and evolving portrait of you.

__________

“invent yourself and then reinvent yourself,
don't swim in the same slough.
invent yourself and then reinvent yourself and
stay out of the clutches of mediocrity.

invent yourself and then reinvent yourself,
change your tone and shape so often that they can never categorize you.

reinvigorate yourself and
accept what is
but only on the terms that you have invented
and reinvented.

be self-taught.

and reinvent your life because you must;
it is your life and
its history
and the present
belong only to
you.”
-Charles Bukowski

_____

“Mack” is a reference to one of my favorite characters to have gone through a transformation. Mackenzie from The Shack.
